What is Complete To Compete?

Complete To Compete is the name of the University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus Title III grant.  The Alaskan Bridge To College is one of the Complete to Compete grant’s projects that explore ways to provide better support for students in rural and native communities.

Other projects include one-to-one support from our online and e-learning, financial literacy, and rural/native student specialists. Title III grants are funded by the federal Department of Education.  

I have heard of preparation courses that are college courses. Can I do that instead?

Yes, you can. The benefit of starting with the Alaskan Bridge To College course is that it is low cost, self-paced, and will not affect your college record. If you are happy with what you learn in the Alaskan Bridge To College course, and feel confident, you can apply to do more advanced preparation with courses that do get college credit. At UAS these are the UNIV 101 (3 credits) and UNIV 193P (1 credit) courses.

Why isn’t this course listed on the UAS website?

The Alaskan Bridge To College course is a preparation program for people who want to make sure that they are ready to succeed when they go to college. It has been developed as part of a pilot project to improve the college success skills of Alaskans. It is offered through the UAS Sitka Campus but does not provide students with college credits.

Who can I talk to about going to college?

What does the program cost?

The Alaskan Bridge To College program is funded by a grant so that it can be offered at no cost to people who are interested in preparing for college. You can see more about the grant in the background topic of the FAQ section.  

Does doing this course mean that I will have a better chance of getting a place at a UA School?

Completing the course is a great start to making a successful application. As you will learn in the course, your willingness to put in the time to learn is what will make a big difference!  Completing this course will NOT be considered when you apply for a college course, but being comfortable with the way that UA works will definitely help you succeed once you enroll in classes. 

Are there classes I need to do before I start the course?

The course is designed to help anyone who has basic computer skills and can read in English at a 9th grade level. We are working to make the course accessible to people with 7th grade level English skills in future versions. 

If you need help with English or computer skills, you can see what is offered by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development . You might also be able to find help at your local library or community center. 

Is this a college course?

No.This course is a college preparation course. It has been created at the University of Alaska Southeast and is managed by the UAS Sitka Campus. It is designed to help you learn the skills you will need to succeed when you apply and enroll at college. You will not be awarded college credit or have a college transcript.
